Best Places in Santorini

1. Wander in the streets of Oia

Welcome to the most idyllic and romantic place in Santorini: Oia!

Oia is the most romantic part of the island, where the most luxurious hotels are nested. And there is a reason for that.

Once you step into Oia, you feel like you are in a fairytale! It’s impossible to be indifferent to Santorini blue-domed churches, whitewashed houses, and those charming caves wanting to emerge from the rocks.

Oia is everything a tourist expects of Santorini. Every corner looks like a postcard, and the best way to explore it is to just wander without plans. Stroll in Santorini, soak in the breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea, and just enjoy.

Make sure you watch the breathtaking sunset in Oia. The sunsets are legendary here. It’s like watching the sky going orange with the blue ocean merging!

For an unforgettable experience, head to Oia Castle, where the sunset gets even more spectacular. Believe me, it’s a moment you will never forget!

2. Discover Ammoudi Bay

Another great place to visit in Santorini is Ammoudi Bay. This is one of the best places to eat, as it is packed with restaurants serving fresh fish and seafood.

Tip: If you are looking for a low-budget meal, consider eating in Oia instead. Eating fresh fish here can be expensive.

3. Set sights on Armonia Beach

Just a 5-minute walk from Ammoudi Bay is Armonia Beach. This is one of the best-kept secrets in Santorini and one of my favorite places in the island.

Swim in the turquoise waters of Armonia Beach, and soak in the views of beautiful Oia at a distance. And if you are an adventurous kind of traveler, don’t lose the chance to jump from one of the rocks ahead. I really had a good time here.

There are hidden gems in Santorini. Discover the best one!

Tip: This is a rock beach. Don’t forget to use proper shoes, as the rock can be slippery.

4. Explore beautiful Thira

Being the center of Santorini, Thira is one of the island’s most visited spots.

There are loads of restaurants, shops and little boutique stores, selling beautiful clothes, traditional Greek jewelry, or souvenirs.

From here, visit the Three Bells of Thira. This is one of the most iconic churches in Santorini, made of white and blue, as it is known in the island’s architecture.

Curiosity: Greece is known for its typical pieces of jewelry. In Santorini you can find loads of jewelry shops everywhere. At a great price! Good luck if you are with a woman on this trip!

5. Explore Ormos Firon

In Thira, visit the port known as Ormos Firon. Be prepared though… you are about to make some exercise!

The little port is 300 steps away and is worth a visit during the day. Alternatively, use the cable car. Please do not use the donkeys, as these animals deserve to live a happy life. I went down on foot and went back by cable car.

From this location, numerous boats leave for volcano tours and hot spring tours. By the way, it’s a great experience!

Get ready to see amazing views!

Tip: Donkeys are cute, but they also have their needs. Be aware that until you reach the spot, you will have a very unpleasant scent of the digests of the donkeys.

6. Santorini volcano and hot springs

Don’t miss the chance to set your foot on the most popular volcano in the island: the Santorini Volcano.

Doing the tour is a unique and unforgettable experience! The tour typically starts with a boat from the port of Thira. As you approach the island, you will notice the distinct scent of sulfur. That’s because there is still volcanic activity in Santorini!

Once you reach the island, deep breath… You are about to hike up towards the top of the volcano!

Be ready for a one-of-a-kind experience in Santorini

Tip: The hike can be a bit challenging, but the breathtaking views of the sea against the surrounding islands makes it all worth it. Believe me!

This pink-hued sand is so unbelievable!

At the top, you will have the opportunity to hear about Santorini volcano history from your knowledgeable instructor. And of course, you will also be taking in the stunning panoramic views of the caldera and the sea!

After the hike, you will return to the boat and sail to the nearby island, where you will jump into the hot water springs! As you approach the island, the water will get warmer and warmer.

The tour typically lasts around 5 hours. Whether you are a nature lover, an adventure seeker, or simply looking to soak up some Greek sunshine, this tour in Santorini is sure to mark your trip in Santorini! Enjoy it!

Tip: In this tour, wear an older swimsuit. The orange, yellow hues of the water will probably stain all your clothes.

7. Visit Imerovigli

Walk from Thira to Imerovigli. This is a 30-minute walk, and you will be amazed by the views you’re about to see.

Located on the highest point of the island, Imerovigli is often referred to as the ‘Balcony of Santorini’. As you walk through the beautiful streets here, you will be greeted by blue-dommed churches, white-watched buildings, and charming cafés and restaurants.

Imerovigli is also known for its peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. You will definitely feel a sense of tranquility and calmness that is hard to find!

Don’t miss the chance to visit the famous Skaros Rock – a magnificent rock formation that juts out into the sea!

8. Discover the impressive Red Beach

Next stop, Red Beach! Be prepared to have a one-of-a-kind beach experience.

As its name suggests, Red Beach is known for its red sand and red cliffs making up the scene. The beach is located in the south of the island and is easily accessible by car, bus, or on foot.

Once you step onto the beach, you will be struck by its vivid colors and natural beauty.

One of the best ways to experience Red Beach is to stroll along the shoreline. You can also soak up some sunshine or enjoy a drink in one of the local cafes and restaurants.

The unique texture and color of the sand give the beach a distinct personality that is hard to find anywhere else!

Tip: I don’t recommend Red Beach for the usual experience of swimming in the sea. Milos, Corfu or Crete are much better options.

9. Set sights on charming Pyrgos

Have you heard about a little, traditional village called Pyrgos? This village feels like a hidden gem in Santorini.

Pyrgos may not be the most visited place on the island. But the lack of crowds only adds to the town’s allure! With its blue dome churches and whitewashed houses.

This is a great choice for Greek culture enthusiasts.

Visiting Pyrgos is like stepping into a little postcard of Greek architecture

10. Discover enchanting Kamari

As you stroll along the coastline, you’ll be greeted by the blue waters of Aegean Sea and the charming line of restaurants, cafes, and shops along the beach. Lay back on your chair, listen to some music, and watch the magical sunset of Santorini!

Things to do in Santorini FAQ

Nested in the Aegean Sea, Santorini is part of the Cyclades Greek islands. It’s also one of the most visited islands in Greece, thanks to its charm and romantic ambience.

My advice is to spend 4 to 5 days on the island. You will have time to soak up that romantic atmosphere, have a relaxing time, and still get to explore the entire island.

Go either by airplane or boat. Feel free to explore ferry options in Greece.

Being a Greek island, Santorini is known for Greek dishes, such Moussaka, or Gyros.

If you seek the most romantic island in Greece, the answer is yes! Santorini is difficult to beat. But if you’re dreaming about those dreamy, astounding Greek islands for the beach, Santorini might not be the best option for you. Consider other islands, like Milos, Ios, or Crete.

Santorini is known for its breathtaking views, and it’s difficult to name a single ‘prettiest’ place on the island.

Oia offers the most impressive views to the Aegean Sea. Santorini Volcano is impressive and deserves a visit. Armonia Beach provides stunning views of Oia from the water. And from Imerovigli to Oia, there is the most beautiful pathway I have ever seen.

I would say depends on your budget! If you’re looking to soak up the sun in those Greek, luxurious hotels with a sea view, opt to stay in Oia.

Oia is nested on a privileged part of the island, offering the most amazing sunsets on the island. One night in Oia can go from 300€/night to more than 2000€/night.

If you plan to make a budget trip and still get to enjoy the island, opt to stay in Thira. The more distant you get from the sea, the cheaper.

Definitely! Santorini is widely known for its luxurious hotel caves with infinite pools. It’s also a common destination for honeymoons and couples.
