7 Things To Do in Eleuthera Bahamas You Probably Didn’t Know

1. Reach a Secret Sandbar

Have you ever walked on a sandbar? A secret, pristine sandbar in Schooner Cays rests a few minutes away from Eleuthera with plenty of sand dollars, small fish and conchs to explore. Another half-mile sandbar exists near Royal Island. And yet, surprisingly, most travelers still skip places like these in Eleuthera.

Reaching the sandbar, you feel as if you’ve found your slice of paradise on a tropical island. It’s everything you could imagine – crystal-clear waters, white sand and a peace you probably didn’t realize you needed.

The ride is long, but packed with spectacular scenery. The best way to visit the sandbar is through a boat tour, which takes roughly 4 hours of pure adventure.

2. Relax at Eleuthera Bahamas Pink-Sand Beach

Few places on Earth feel so spectacular as a tropical pink-sand beach. If you go to Eleuthera without visiting one, you’ll regret the chance of seeing something extraordinary.

This powder-soft sand beach, located on Harbour Island, actually shimmered with hues of blush pink. The sand gets its rosy hue from tiny coral insects called foraminifera, whose shells mix with white sand to create that soft blush color.

To visit this Eleuthera beach, take a ferry or a private boat for superior comfort. On land, spend the day off right by relaxing at this romantic beach as a couple or family – everyone will love it!

3. Visit a Pineapple Field

If there’s one thing you have to try in Eleuthera, it’s the pineapples. Some say, Eleuthera farms some of the sweetest pineapples in the world, thanks to the perfect farming conditions on the island.

You can find them sold by friendly locals on the roadside or fresh at the farmer’s market in Gregory Town, the pineapple capital of The Bahamas. Many local farmers welcome visitors for casual tours where you can walk the fields, learn about the growing process, and – best part – sample freshly picked pineapples that are unbelievably juicy and sweet.

Or maybe venture yourself into the annual Pineapple Festival in Eleuthera held every June. This event is an opportunity for everyone, locals and visitors, to celebrate together. Of course there are delicious-farmed pineapples!

4. Dive a Blue Hole Rumored to Have Healing Powers

The Bahamas has long been known for its mysterious, natural caves that seem straight out of a Pirates of the Caribbean movie. And Eleuthera is full of them.

One of my favorites is Ocean Hole in Rock Sound. Locals believe it’s bottomless and has healing powers. Plunge and take in the natural beauty, or simply stop for a minute to admire the spectacular natural setting the blue hole is set in.

Sapphire Blue Hole, near Preacher’s Cave, is another blue hole that deserves a visit thanks to the sapphire waters perfect for a quick dip.

5. Spot Sand Dollars at Receiver’s Beach

Receiver’s Beach has something extraordinary: sand dollars! For those curious about sand dollars, this is the best beach in Eleuthera to find them.

Finding the sand dollars is easy! Simply walk out to the third set of sandbars and gently drag your toes through the sand beneath the surface. You’ll either feel them just underfoot or spot them peeking out from the sand.

If you come across brown ones, those are still alive – snap a quick photo and kindly return them to their home. The white ones, though? They’re perfect souvenirs as do the shells along the shoreline.

6. Explore a Nature Cave

What if I told you there are also secret nature caves in Eleuthera, you will regret not visiting? You really don’t want to miss visiting a cave if you’re a nature lover.

Probably the most visited is Hatchet Bay Cave. It is the longest and deepest cave system, where you’ll explore stalactites, underground pools, and chambers that you have to see to believe exist. You will want a guide with you as it is over a mile long and pitch black.

Preacher’s Cave in north Eleuthera is another natural cave, just a few steps from a spectacular pink-sand beach.

7. Surf

Surfer’s Beach is one of the most iconic Eleuthera beaches. Some rank it as a second version of Hawaii, despite most travelers not knowing of this. The waves are often above shoulder level, the water is crystal-clear, and no crowds exist to disturb you.

Catch a big wave. Or simply unwind in an undisturbed paradise that you probably didn’t know existed. And if you’re lucky, you might have a chance to hire Surfer Pete to give you surfing lessons, or rent all kinds of material, from surfboards to snorkeling gear on the site.
